That was my first thought, but it seems that that may be a false friend, since Mantelsteine actually seem to be some kind of cladding, e.g. "shuttering block", "shuttering kits/ systems based on hollow blocks or panels".

agree Steffen Walter : Also 'mantlepieces' (seems to be US spelling, though). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireplace_mantel and http://www.houzz.com/brick-fireplace-mantel / On second thought, your additional suggestion seems to make more sense.
