Mit seinem schmalen Stirnkanten vermag der Band in das Dichtungsmittel einzudringen, das ihn damit in sich aufnimmt.
I assume it is saying that the sealing medium holds in the band but at the moment I cannot think of a neat way of expressing this. I realise that "in sich aufnehmen" can mean "to assimilate" but I do not think it applies here.
