German term

Kastenwagen

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
There's already a couple of suggestions for this, but none that fit my context of motorhomes. Is there a standard term - box van??

Thanks.

or the 1967 Dodge Monaco - look at the gallery here

Susie. I don't question what you remember or what you or your faimly had. FYI Woody Station Wagons were there also in the 1940s and 1950s. Check Plymouths and 1966 Ford Country Squire, 1968 Ford Torino Squire or 1968 Chevrolet Caprice
Susan Zimmer Jun 27, 2008:
Yes, petrolhead, I understand that. I was just pointing out that this is what comes to my to my US ears. I'm sure a UK audience might feel differently. The wood-effect station wagons were a hit in the 1970's (my dad had one), not the 1960's, just fyi.
petrolhead Jun 27, 2008:
"Wood" or wood-effect panelling on the side of 1960s US-built station wagons is not to be confused with "a panel van". If only because we are taking about vans and not cars (or their station wagon derivatives) here.
Susan Zimmer Jun 27, 2008:
Is this for a UK audience or an international / US audience? If I hear "panel van", I think of the old station wagons that had what looked like wood paneling on the outside. But that's just me. Is this actually a motorhome? RV in US English. Or simply van
petrolhead Jun 27, 2008:
alternatively you may want to tell us which manufacturer it is, and then we can establish that "panel vans" are indeed what we are talking about.
DC Josephs Jun 27, 2008:
Since the client is already using "van", you might want to consider using just plane "van" as well, e.g.: XXY now builds on this success with a new line of vans.

panel van

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kastenwagen

The English Wikipedia entry is very imprecise in its definition.

In the UK a "panel van" is mainly a windowless type of van with the body built as one unit "incorporating" the cab. As opposed to a "box van" where the cab and the cargo "boxvan" body are usually separate structures.

Also, "Kastenwagen" or "panel van" derivatives are often manufactured as such "from scratch" as legitimate versions offered by car/van manufacturers. A "box van", on the other hand, usually starts life as a chassis cab, with a "box" body of customer';s choice added by a bodybuilder.

Please note that the success of the "XXX Vans" is one thing, strengthened by and the introduction of a new "Kastenwagen". "Motorhomes" ARE built based on these panel vans, presumably

RV box van

We just bought a box truck, which is a transport vehicle.

There are what are called "RV box vans" (RV=recreational vehicle)

neutral petrolhead : "Kastenwagen" is a commercial vehicle used to carry goods. You have mixed three different categories of vehicles in your entry. // This does look like a box van that's been adapted/converted for recreational or motorhome use.

I don't think so. There's a box truck, which is a transport vehicle and a box van, which is a recreational vehicle. If you look at the example I gave you would see that. Maybe UK English is different.
