German term

Materialmalerei

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
This is one of three (somewhat overlapping) strains of modern art referred to in my source sentence:
"Die visuelle Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts hat daher – neben der Materialmalerei, der Objektkunst und Installation – neue Handlungsformen der Kunst hervorgebracht"

Basically we're talking about "painting" using nontraditional materials -- as the term is used here, for example:
"Bezeichnung für Bilder, die aus sonst unüblichen Materialien (Pflanzensamen, zwischen Glasplatten befindlichen verschiedenfarbigen Sandschichten, kleinen Steinen, Glasstückchen, Stroh etc.) bestehen."
http://www.beyars.com/kunstlexikon/lexikon_5832.html

And here:
"Eine Materialmalerei, ganz ohne Ölfarbe und Leinwand, nur mit leichten Stoffen und Glas"
http://www.neuegalerie-archiv.at/stiege/98/motschnig/motschn...

The search results I've gotten for "material painting" have been a mixed bag -- a lot are irrelevant, others (from the English-language versions of German websites) are questionable, but a few (mostly references to the Catalan painter Antoni Tàpies, translating his term "pintura materica") seem to be on the mark.

Anyone know a better term for this, or is "material painting" as good as it gets?

PS: I've already seen this: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/art_arts_crafts_...

mixed media painting

If Taplès seems to be on the mark, then this term also might be:

Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Reader : Possibly 'painting' in inv. commas if (@Patrick) the ref. is close to your Beyars find? - (as you already have it in your §2)

Thanks, Stephen.
agree Helen Shiner : works in mixed media - from the description above. I don't understand why the GER would be termed Malerei if there is no PAINTING of any kind involved. But if there is, then, yes, as you and Stephen (below) have it. Either would do.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Yes, I think this will have to do. I'd hoped to avoid it since it also includes things that don't involve any nontraditional materials at all, but I don't see a better alternative. Thank you, Peter, and everyone else!"

collage

As far as I know, this kind of image making with materials is generally called collage.

just checked the other entry, why do you not like collage as a possible translation?
Example sentence:

This term was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th century when collage became a distinctive part of modern art

Note from asker:
Thanks, Heather, but I'm looking for something broader than "collage." Check the Neue Galerie link I gave above, for example -- I don't think most viewers would call that collage.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Todd Mikkelsen : Collage is attaching elements with glue and never painting with paint or any other materials. "Mixed media" is better.

painting with composite media

- based on entry for Materialbild/er in M.L. Apelt, German-E. Dict.: Art History - Archaeology (Berlin: E. Schmidt Verlag, 1982 [!]), and aware that this seems like a bulkier paraphrase of 'mixed media'...
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Shiner : See my comments to Peter.
