I think I may have put my refs in the wrong place. It seems there is actually a material known as 'vegetal leather'
Travelin Ann Nov 10, 2009:
Agree a vegan would not want them :)

You have to wait 24 hours to close and grade. See: http://www.proz.com/?sp=about/kudoz
Gail Bond (asker) Nov 10, 2009:
Ann, you found the same as me! I think I'm going to go for 'vegetable-tanned leather'. I don't think it means vegan leather. Anyway... since the sandals also have REAL patent leather straps, a vegan wouldn't want to buy them!
This is my first Kudoz question... not sure what to do next... how do I choose this option and award points?
Travelin Ann Nov 10, 2009:
or vegetable-tanned leather From wikipedia:
Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using tannin and other ingredients found in vegetable matter, tree bark, and other such sources. It is supple and brown in color, with the exact shade depending on the mix of chemicals and the color of the skin. It is the only form of leather suitable for use in leather carving or stamping. Vegetable-tanned leather is not stable in water; it tends to discolor, and if left to soak and then dry it will shrink and become less supple and harder. In hot water, it will shrink drastically and partly gelatinize, becoming rigid and eventually brittle. Boiled leather is an example of this where the leather has been hardened by being immersed in hot water, or in boiled wax or similar substances. Historically, it was occasionally used as armor after hardening, and it has also been used for book binding.
Travelin Ann Nov 10, 2009:
I think this confirms vegetable-dyed leather.
Gail Bond (asker) Nov 10, 2009:
Not much context, but here it is:
Les sandales compensées. Brides croisées en cuir végétal et cuir
vernis.
It's not patent leather, as that's 'cuir vernis'.
Travelin Ann Nov 10, 2009:
Any more context? I'm thinking perhaps "vegetable dyed leather"

Gail Bond (asker) Nov 10, 2009:
Hmmm... I thought this too but when I googled it I found info about the tanning process using natural products, but suggesting it's still 'real' leather.

vegetable-tanned leather

http://www.ctc.fr/forum/reponses.php3?sujet=1013

VEGETABLE-TANNED LEATHER is tanned using tree bark and various other plants. It comes in various thicknesses and colors. Characterized by its firmness, strength and lack of elasticity, vegetable-tanned leather is used for a variety of purposes, including crafts (e.g., leather carving, leather stamping, etc.), belts, saddles, harnesses, holsters, shoe soles and some luggage.

Sorry, just saw this is in the discussion box which I didn't consult before posting. I work a lot for a major French "maroquinier" and knew the answer instantly and, as you seemed to be going off-track with vegan leather, posted right away!

Vegan Leather

The term "vegan leather" is simply a neologism for the "man-made" leather we have known for years. Animal-free, it is the choice of many animal loving fashionistas. The term refers to several materials such as:

* Vegetan: This is a microfibre material that is specifically designed and used as an animal-friendly leather substitute.
* Lorica: This material is made out of several different microfibers. Sidi, an Italian motorcycle company uses it a lot.
* Birko-Flor: This is what eco-icon Birkenstock uses. It’s made out of acrylic and polyamide felt fibres. There are two kinds — the kind you find on normal Birks and a kind that looks like pleather.
* Birkibuc: Another Birkenstock baby. It’s made out of the same stuff, but looks and feels like nubuck leather.
* PVC: Finally, a term you should be familiar with! Good for animals. Not so good for environment.
* Kydex: This is an acrylic-PVC alloy. It’s produce by Kleerdex, a manufacturing company.
Example sentence:

Being an animal lover, Diana Rigg's (Mrs. Peel) catsuits for the Avengers were made of vegan leather.

Vegetal Leather

Its land of origin is Acre, a savage region along the boundaries between Bolivia, Brazil and Peru, where the "seringueira" trees grow spontaneously in an exceptional and fragile context of biodiversity.

From these plants, the native populations extract a resin called "pela" which is then spread on cotton canvas while smoked on shrub fire.
At this point they are left drying in the sun. The sheets obtained are one different from the other.
This activity of the "Seringueiros", as the area's inhabitants are called, follows the evolution of the seasons.

Those who choose a Moroso product in authentic vegetal leather:
- know that there are many reasons to choose the softness, resistance and sensuality of the authentic vegetal leather 100% natural;
- know the pleasure of looking at intense colours that recall the endless shades of the rain forest, and that change with time, just as we change;
- are aware of supporting with their purchase the indigenous populations, first link in a chain that starts from a plant to arrive in your home or in your offices. A vital chain, which must not be broken.
