Have you looked on Google? (sorry-first question was a mistake-you clearly state it's France).

leave in French with description in brackets

Hi Sha,

My husband works for the Roads Directorate for this Ministry. This title has no "official" translation, so it really depends on your text. Generally speaking, I would leave the title as is and then put Insector General for Public Works/Infracstructure/whatever in brackets -- if necessary.
The whole Ministry has no consistent English translation. If you look at their website, even the title of the Ministry itself changes, and I see this all the time in the various "official" reports that my husband receives in English. I think the main thing is to keep the main French title and be consistent with any English terminology.
Hope this helps.

You can see the inconsistency from these two examples, his title is sometimes translated and sometimes left in French.

agree Nick Lingris : Thumbs up for your approach (keep the original, consistent translation). // What I can tell for certain is that the translators at the Ministry are not all members of ProZ.

Thanks Nick. It's hard, bcs even the French terminology for this Ministry is all over the map. So whenever I work for them, I choose what sounds best and then stick to it like glue! Maybe only we translators care about things like consistent terminology??
