French term
sauf à s’équiper
French to English
Marketing
Medical: Pharmaceuticals
In a text about wholesalers and manufacturersof generic drugs. Context: "Conditions commerciales et marges sont jugées correctes sans être mirobolantes
• En effet, la bataille permanente des prix sur les génériques fait que le pharmacien arrive à gagner sa vie de façon raisonnable
• Cette guerre des prix impose, en contrepartie, une veille permanente qui prend du temps, sauf à s’équiper". Does this have to do with pharmacy equipment? If so, how doesit fit with the previous section? TIA for any help.

unless you are really organized [parse: unless you are equipped to do so]
s'equiper in the sense of being organized with some kind of information gathering/organizing source so you don't have to figure out the pricing all the time..In colloquial French, I can see where être equipé can mean have the means/organization of getting pricing information without spending a lot of time to do so...
in English, we can say:
constant price watching takes a lot of time unless you are equipped to do so...
right?

Final: unless you are equipped to do so
ie monitor prices continuously

maybe better: unless you are set up to do so..

In colloquial French, you here this equipé a lot where it means to be set up to do something, ready to do it..not necessarily with physical equipment..in the sense of organized..there\'s a kind of linguistic slippage here..

unless you invest in the means to do it
Like Jane, I prefer "unless" to "except".
I concur with Francis on the idea: the trouble is it's not easy to express it this succinctly in English.

Yes, if refers to a verb in English, however here came from "la veille", which is of course a noun. That's the trouble with only translating parts of sentences... , Yours,
