French term

Filière agroalimentaire

French to English Marketing Food & Drink section header
Hi,
Can anyone advised the best way to translate this? Probably it is just as simple as 'the agribusiness channel' but 'Filière agroalimentaire' works so well in French, I really want to find the same in English! TIA

Discussion

Claudine Seynaeve (asker) Mar 7, 2006:
Thanks Sylvia No, the text is not talking about distribution. It's a header (I should have put plural) like "Filières agroqlimentaires" that includes all sub-segments/categories/channels [that being the word I'm looking for actually!] such as fruits/vegetables/dairy pdts....
Sylvia Smith Mar 7, 2006:
Is the text talking about distribution? What kind of text is it - perhaps that could help.
Claudine Seynaeve (asker) Mar 7, 2006:
maybe food industry channels as suggested by Sylvia then..
Claudine Seynaeve (asker) Mar 7, 2006:
Thanks for all your suggestions so far - However, I mean 'Filiere agroalimentaire' as including all related 'filieres' such as meat products / seafood and fishery / fruits and vegetables and so on.. Therefore I'm not sure how 'Food industry' could be declined to mean this idea....

Agro-food network

This is used, although I suspect it's more European English than English English.

Or "agrofood sector" which gets a lot more google hits from UK pages than "agro-food network"

A discussion on how is sustainability being interpreted in the agro-food sector;
· What are the main societal issues /policy issues that arise from a concern with sustainability;
· Are there any limitations / problems associated with the application of sustainability in the
case presented?
· How might sustainability be better addressed/ adopted in the agro-food sector?"

agree MoiraB : yes, agro-food sector. Commonly used term nowadays and broader than food processing industry

Thank you Moira. Yes, I'm much happier with 'sector' than 'network'.
agree chaplin : tu es la seule à traduire "agro" , bravo!

Merci Ségolène :-)
agree Debbie Tacium Ladry : yes - this is what is used in Canada: agri-food (not agro) to include the essential farm aspect :) Also, sector is better. http://www.carc-crac.ca/index.html

Thank you Debbie. I'll check agri-food in the UK.
agree Marc Glinert : aha - sector. That is the word I was looking for - usually pretty good for filière. But in this case, it's a hard call between sector and industry. Food just seems too big to be a sector

Don't you think that industry = "les industries agroalimentaires" rather than "la filière"? And it's not just food :-) See http://www.terralies.com/lexique/agroalimentaire.asp and http://www.agrojob.com/definition-Agroalimentaire/definition...

agree df49f (X) : en France, filière: jargon consacré pour "industry" ou "sector", nothing to do with channels or networks - éventuellement business line dans certains contextes - maybe "agri-food sector/industry"

yes, "sector" works too, thanks!

food industry distribution network or channel

I agree with Susan about food industry, but you may need to add distribution or network or channel to account for 'filière', depending on the context.
