French term

accroche

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
In guidance about taking an environmentally friendly approach to organising events. This is in the section relating to the buildings / venues:

Energie

I am thinking of putting "holders"

Anyone got any better ideas?

NB: I have not found the existing PROZ entries to be applicable here.

Discussion

Tony M Nov 20, 2011:
@ Claude Yes, but sadly, even that might be too restrictive; for example, what if these were the tubular kind of 'lighting bar' or 'lighting boom' found in theatres and some other venues? Perfectly acceptable as an 'accroche', but couldn't really be called a 'bracket'... There are plenty of other things that could be covered by this term in FR, so we need to try and find something equally all-embracing in EN.

Well, maybe "mounting brackets", "brackets" covering a multitude of supports

I would say definitely not 'holders'!

It's a little unclear from the small amount of context we have, but this sounds to me they are talking about venues like village halls / salles polyvalentes etc., which although they may not be equiipped with 'stage' or show lighting, do often have various mounting facilities for people to bring in their own lighting equipment — apart from simplifying things for the users, this also helps to ensure that safety standards are maintained and avoids ad-hoc 'lash-ups'.
The trouble is, we would probably use a whole string of different terms in EN to describe all possible varieties — I can't really think of one single word that conveys exactly the breadth of ideas as 'accroches' in FR :-(

I just came across another term applicable in this sort of context: suspension point

agree Jennifer Levey : Agree on all counts. 'sky hooks' came to my mind, but would likely be misunderstood by many/most readers.

Thanks, R! Yes, I agree, I think that would be too jargony for what I assume to be the intended readership here.
Something went wrong...
