In a document outlining the differences between the RS422 and RS485 standards, the transmission modes are described as "Différentiel adapté en impédance" and "Différentiel adaptation en impédance" respectively. Any ideas gratefully received, as ever...

impedance-matched differential (transmission)
"Différentiel adapté en impédance" and "Différentiel adaptation en impédance" are just the consequence of the author's poor and misguided attempt to put variety where none is needed (or desirable).

To clarify and expand upon Tony's comments below, both the RS422 and RS482 transmission systems both use balanced differential signals.
'adapté' refers to the fact that for optimum transmission quality the transmission line is 'matched' (to prevent, or at least reduce, reflections on the line and maximise signal power transfer over long distances), not to the fact that it is 'balanced' ('equilibré').

differential adapted in (electrical) impedance
I think "impédance" can simply be translated as "impedance". See the definition on Wikipedia.

: 'adapté' has a special meaning in this context which is not correctly rendered by 'adapted' in English.

: I'm going to be stronger than M/M; with the best will in the world, this wouldn't be a workable translation for the source term, for exactly the reason stated by M/M/
