French term

noyau

French to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks Cables/sockets/plugs
Context:
Noyau noir CAT5e non blindé UTP bloc 110
La prise GIGAMEDIA Catégorie 5e est un noyau RJ45 au format keystone qui offre différents type de raccordement :
Sans outils spécifiques
Bloc à contacts auto-dénudants

I`m well aware that noyau is core but pretty sure i`ve seen "jack" used in similar context. I.e. Cat 5e RJ45 jack

Are the two interchangeable or am I mistaken?
TIA Chris.

@ All When is a "noyau" not a core, when it is a jack. Time for coffee me thinks.
Séverine Watson Jan 26, 2022:
@Althea, indeed it is. Fancy putting it down as an answer and I'll validate it?
Séverine Watson Jan 26, 2022:
@Tony and @Asker - I stand corrected! Having been put straight by Tony on this one (it would seem I answered FAR too quickly), I decided to delve a bit more.

Lo and behold - Gigamedia's own website give "jack" as the term for this item:

English: https://www.gigamedia.net/c4057&aGGM 627020000
French: https://www.rexel.fr/frx/Catégorie/Réseau-informatique/Produ...

My apologies. ;)
Tony M Jan 26, 2022:
@ Severine A 'jack' can be both the connector (usually male) on the end of the cable AND the socket into which that is plugged; this is an historical term, nowadays less used in EN-GB other than for the specific type of connector referred to as a 'jack' (think microphones, headests, and old-fashioned telephone switchbaords!) The term is however, much more widely used in EN-US to apply to almost any kind of connector.
And although in EN we do indeed use 'core' for cables, please note that in FR this is more usually 'âme' — 'noyau' has other uses in electrical contexts.
Tony M Jan 26, 2022:
@ Asker I'm afraid both you and Severine are missing a key point here: in this kind of modular connector system, the sockets (accessories, fittings) mounted on your column have a 'frame' which is common to all types, and then a 'noyau' that makes it specifically an RJ-45 / USB / mains socket etc.
I don't actually know what we call this in EN (though it sould be easy enough to find on manufacturers' EN websites (Legrand, Schneider, inter alia) — in the absence of the proper term, I'd be inclined to refer to them as something like '(connector) module'
Séverine Watson Jan 26, 2022:
Jack and core = not the same thing From my understanding, the jack is the connnector on the end of the cable so that you can insert it into a port or socket for example.

The core is inside the cable. If you were to cut a cable, you may well spot three or four cables (sometimes even 3.5 cables) - see https://zwcables.com/4-core-cable/

Hope that clarifies things.

keystone jack

If you look at the pictures of your product (here https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&c... ) it is exactly the keystone jack (see https://www.computercablestore.com/cat6-speedterm-keystone-j... )
The keystone pieces are used to assemble a larger module with different single units (i.e. the keystones)
