French term

fosses

French to English Other Archaeology The Swahili, the Abbasids

I know that 'fosse' can be either pit or grave. As there is prior mention of the 'sépultures', do you think this is grave in this instance??

If in doubt, use the most general term. As it's archeology, you can't use the most generic term, i.e. "excavation", as that would risk confusion with the archeologists' own excavations. the fact that they criss-cross indicates that they are longish, so possibly trenches. With luck, you may find further information later in the text, or in drawings/photos of the site.
Note from asker:
The client normally uses fossé for trench so I think I shall stick with pit. As you say, best to err on the side of caution and not specify too much. Many thanks everyone.

agree Eduardo Ramos : Pits, I would say [if related to stratigraphy and, especially, the Abbasid dynasty.]
