meet is a meeting
Peer comment(s):

agree Alp Berker : I think the meet here also refers to meeting

disagree Refugio : A meeting is not called a meet. Sideline = A line along either of the two sides of a playing court or field, marking its limits.

agree juvera : ODE: "meet" > informal, a meeting.

Periphery

Is it a sporting event - then "meet" right, or it is actually a meeting, where things were discussed? In both cases, he is not a main player and has been relegated to periphery, if not toally excluded.

English term (edited): on the sidelines

ot taking part, not involved / set aside, abandonned, forgotten

Here you should not translate litteraly

Yes sidelines means out of bounds -- (a line that marks the side boundary of a playing field)
and yes the context is sport (my guess would be that it is a doping allegation)
and meet, sports meeting -- (a meeting at which a number of athletic contests are held)

but here it is the expression
on the sidelines (rather than just the word sidelines
meaning not taking part, not involved
as in
Morelli left on the sideline
Heather Reichmann was left on the sideline with an injured shoulder.

also meaning set aside, abandonned, forgotten
as in
Good manners left on the sideline

literally to be correct.
I\'m also aware that it is not a translation
but rather an explanation
