Does it mean there were seveal takes because he was not pleased with his playing banjo?

still playing banjo chords
John learnt guitar from his mother, and this was based on banjo chords rather than guitar chords, so his playing was substandard - particular in the eyes of Paul and George. This sentence means that he had reverted to banjo-style chords.
