The three of the Beatles as Ed Sullivan gets a lesson in playing bass before the BEatles historic appearance on Sullivan's show. George Harrsion recovering from flu, missed this audition.

Does it mean he did not take part in the program or he was not present when they taught him to play before the program? What is the meaning of an audition here?

The preceding definintion was copied and pasted from the Random House Dicitonary.

IMHO, it is tongue in cheek sense of humor that Harrison was not present when Ed Sullivan \"made his audition\" to become part of the Beatles. Obviously Sullivan was not trying out to join them, but since this was a night of firsts, and since the first meaning of audition is to test a musician, etc., for ascertain his fitness or suitability for something, this is what it means.

See the definition of \"audition\" by Random House below.

absent before the program

It means he was absent before the program. I've seen a clip of the Beatles' Ed Sullivan Show performance, and all four of them were definitely there.
