Medical claim

English Medical Medical (general)
Dear collegues, in the sentence "Data obtained through review of medical claims", what does "medical claims" exactly mean? I do not know much about US procedures, so every explanation is helpful.
Many thanks

in this context, it appears that the medical claims here are not of the legal type but rather the more general sort as in requests for payments or reimbursement

In the US., medical claims in general refers to the requests for payment made by the provider/doctor to the insurance company after a patient is seen and has made a copayment and/or by the patient to the insurance company (Depends on the type of medical insurance -- many years ago, before copayments were popular, the patient would pay the entire visit and then would be reimbursed at a certain percentage such as 70 or 80 percent of the total visit)

Thank you. So, it has nothing to do with legal claims, it is a normal bureaucratic procedure.

a claim for reimbursement/compensation on medical grounds

This is a way of referring to the large amount of data which has accumulated based on the number of claims made on medical grounds, usually to the appropriate insurers. It may also refer to claims made against medical personnel, for example, on grounds of negligence.

The second web link refers to another kind of claim, that of the medical personnel having to claim for services given.

You will have to supply a little more context if you want help to decide which claim is being referred to in your text.

Good luck.

Then I think it is most likely the claim of individuals against their health care insurance companies for medical treatment received by the claiming individuals.

Note from asker:
Thank you. It refers to a published analysis. From the abstract: METHOD: Using a large, automated, US healthcare claims database, we identified all adults who received chemotherapy for NHL, breast cancer, or lung cancer between 1998 and 2002. For these patients, we identified their first course of chemotherapy and each unique cycle within that course.
