bent bouncer

Their kids are going to love them.
Uh-oh, we got a springy toy coming in with a bent bouncer.

Not sure what it is or what it looks like. It's just a doctor in a kids' show who gives her toy babies some toys to play with.

Discussion

Mohamed Fouda (asker) Mar 7, 2022:
@ BdiL Toy babies are baby dolls. In the show, the kid doctor speaks to toys. So, when they get new baby toys they look for little toys for them so they don't cry. They got one a rattle, and another one got a twinkly star, etc.
BdiL Mar 7, 2022:
As it is often the case I feel Tony has the best "answer". And if I may, translation is not about guessing, it is about transferring the spirit of the source text, in this case as foggy as an old London fog. (BTW, I'm sitting wondering what "toy babies" are in the context...)
Lara Barnett Mar 3, 2022:
@ Asker I think Tony makes the perfect point here. The fact is that this is just a general statement that could only relate to the context through further knowledge, which is the way you would need to translate it in your language.
I.E. your translation can be just as general and vague if the source text is. So if the source uses two non-specific vague words to describe this item, then you ought to do exactly the same in the target translation. There is no need to over-specify if the source text does not specify the item's identity.
Tony M Mar 3, 2022:
@ Asker The problem is we don't know exactly what is being talked about here, and the language is ambiguous:
It could be that they are going to receive a 'springy toy' AND a 'bent bouncer', simply 'with' because they are coming in at the same time / from the same donor.
But it might equally mean that it is the 'springy toy' that unfortunately has a 'bent bouncer' — one would imagine that the 'bouncer' is the springy thing that makes it bounce; though difficult to imagine in what way it ight be 'bent.
Then again, it might be referring to a '(baby) bouncer' that is unfortunately 'bent', but will be coming in complete with a 'springy toy'. Maybe the latter is all that is usable from it...
Tony M Mar 3, 2022:
@ Lara & Daryo Mohamed tells us that the toy is never seen.
Lara Barnett Mar 3, 2022:
@ Mohamed Do you see the toy at least once?
Mohamed Fouda (asker) Mar 3, 2022:
The characters are only talking. The toy doesn't appear later in the episode.
Daryo Mar 3, 2022:
@ Mohamed Fouda A silly question ... have you watched the movie?
I bet that this "springy toy" is shown at some point in the movie (means: no need for guessing)
Lara Barnett Mar 2, 2022:
@ Mohamed Does this toy appear any later in the script or narrative? It might be worth waiting to see if any more references appear.
philgoddard Mar 2, 2022:
Since she's a doctor, it sounds like the toy is being brought in for her to fix.

agree philgoddard : There's no way of knowing, but this is a reasonable guess. Maybe it's Zebedee :-)

I think they are different things. They got got a springy toy to hang in front the baby.
Note from asker:
Do you mean the whole toy, springy with a bent bouncer, is a small cradle?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I'm not at all sure, especially from the way it is worded, that this is in fact anything to do with a 'baby bouncer'.
