A den is not the same as a living room, it is generally a smaller room for relaxing or reading. A living room is where you receive your visitors whereas a den is where you spend your private time.

: Así lo traducen Oxford, Harper Collins y Larousse. Coincido con la explicación de Sandra. Eso es lo que significa "den" en EEUU y Canadá. "Sala" es lo que en inglés se llama "living room" y una casa o apartamento puede tener los dos.
