: But I wouldn't use "fortalecer" as it implies the muscles make the back stronger; exercises would 'fortalecer' the back, but not the simple presence of the muscles.

Valid (although those muscles there help protect the back ones, so they 'fortalecen la espalda'); I just wanted to use different words because 'support' can be translated into spanish with different meanings taking into account the context. Thanks, Neil.
