BOD is the amount of oxygen required by a water body for complete stabilization of organic matter by aerobic process of nitrification. In the initial phase when the biodegradable organic matter of a water body is subjected to aerobic nitrification, it spends all its dissolved oxygen and its BOD increases steeply.
