Self-identification

My father's family was from Madrid, Spain. My mother's family was from Sonora, Mexico. I grew up in Arizona as a Mexican American primarily because everyone's family was originally from Mexico in my small town of Superior, Arizona. Both grandfathers came to work in the underground copper mine as I did on returning from the U.S. Army during Vietnam.

My father's name was Garrido and my mother's name was Gonzales.
My name is Jon Garrido and when I began working in Tucson for the City, when asked what Garrido meant I would reply with it is a Spanish name with a great definition. It was during this time I began self identifying as a Hispanic but now that I am involved with national issues, I continue being a Hispanic but now I am also a Latino.

The 1970 Census was the first time that a "Hispanic" identifier was used and data collected with the question. The definition of "Hispanic" has been modified in each successive census. The 2000 Census asked if the person was "Spanish/Hispanic/Latino."
