The procedures established by EU environmental law include, for example, the requirement to conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) of certain projects and for public consultation and/or participation in environmental decision-making.

Environmental principles, standards and procedures may be ** embodied in legal rights ** that individuals can enforce before courts. One of the key objectives of the Aarhus Convention was to expand the scope of such rights, including the right to bring judicial proceedings. The Convention has three pillars: access to information, public participation in decision-making, and access to justice. In EU law, the provisions of the Convention form the basis of a directive (applying to Member States) and a regulation (applying to the EU institutions).
