Retainage is the amount of payment that your customer might withhold to wnsure satisfactory contract performance. For example you might agree to a 10% retainge on the amount you bill your customer. If you bill the customer for 100 dollars, the customer withholds 10 dollars and pays you 90 dollars. after your company has completed the workd satisfactorily, the customer rets the 10 dollars that was retained.

This phrase seems wordy, but I think that it may be the most approprate solution. This term, or , rather, phrase in this case, is taken from page 816 of Francesco de Franchis' Dizionario Giuridico, and the English equivalent is written as "performance guarantee" or "performance bond".
I would think that "retainage" and "performance guarantee" are one in the same.

I think the meaning here implies <momentarily> witholding payment, which is by no means what well-defined terms like trattenuta or ritenuta refer to. On the ohter hand, "sospensione di pagamento" without the further "parziale" specification would suggest a momentary witholding of the whole payment, rather than a part of it.
