"ADMITTED to the Degree of" "AWARDED the Degree of" What is the difference of these two phrases?
In medieval European universities, a student would study several subjects for 3-4 years, at the end of which they would be admitted to the degree of bachelor of arts (or whatever they were studying). Afterward they would go on studying but would also have to participate in disputations (like a dissertation) to earn a master's degree. The phrase "admitted to a degree" makes sense if you think of a degree as not a reward at the end of study, but a step on the path to mastering a subject. So these phrases mean the same thing, just one is more old-fashioned and the other is more common.

Discussion
Some Universities retain the clamour of using Archaic words. Modern and commonly used words, with the Movement for 'Plain English', so as ordinary people can understand, without ambiguity. It looks as the word 'admit' was given to an archaic meaning of actually entering into the Group of those who have ATTAINED and GAINED their Degree, as against the modern understanding of 'admit', as referring to the acceptance to pursue the chosen discipline(degree). So, in this case, the contention is that 'admit' is not for entering into the pursuance of the discipline BUT entering the 'CLUB' of the ones who have already attained the accolade in that particular discipline.
Modern thought varies. However, in this case, without much text, and if as it is stated, simply, 'MSc Certificate', then if there is a Certificate already, I would agree with you Nick. The subject in question 'was admitted into the Club of 'Master of Science'
You may study the references I have given to see the difference between "being admitted to a degree" and "being admitted to a degree course".
Admitted to University does not mean one finishes the University but, allowed to enter and attend the University for the Course chosen.

But if it is an MSc certificate, then the course must be finished, therefore the degree has been awarded.
