This is very important with equipment designed using the increased safety type ‘e’ protection concept in zone 1 and 2 hazardous areas. This concept precludes sparking devices and limits any temperature rise and ingress of solids and liquids including flammable gases into the electrical enclosure, terminal boxes, luminaires etc. The enclosures must meet the design standards in compliance with IEC 529 or BS EN 60529

Exactly to make the place safe....and that set of rules includes protecting the integrity of the equipment! Simple enough.

CANFR They're talking about some standard/set of rules to make the place safe. For example, any sparking device is prohibited within XX ft., air temperature should be within a certain range (or action needs to be taken), a certain type of lamps should be used/some types of lamps are prohibited, etc.

Just a set of safety rules :)

It seems to me that it should be parsed 'hazardous' and 'integrity maintenance' rather than lumping 'hazardous integrity' as one term! Does that perhaps make the meaning clearer?

The equipment must meet the requirements of the IEC etc....therefore I believe it is the integrity of the equipment that must be preserved to protect against possible accidents caused by dangerous substances, gases, etc.

disagree Cyril B. : doesn't make any sense with "sparking devices" or "temperature" - concept is much wider than just 'substances dangereuses'.

please explain.....I understand that the equipment inhibits any device from sparking...therefore reinforcing my explanation of protecting the integrity of the equipment.
