English term

rely upon

English to French Law/Patents Law (general) law firm's retainer language
Hello,

I'm translating into French the general terms and conditions of business of a law firm and have problems translating the verb "rely upon" in the following sentence:

“Associated Person” means any person who is not our client in relation to the Retainer but who we agree shall be entitled to rely upon or receive our services in relation to the Retainer.

How would you translate it?

Thank you in advance!

Discussion

Mehdi Caps Jul 23, 2011:

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "that was a difficult choice because I think the other proposals are almost as good, except for "compter sur" maybe... Thank you very much!"

compter sur nous

Ou se fier à nous pour...
Note from asker:
These would be the natural translation of "rely upon" but in this context "rely upon our services" means that the Associated Person is authorised to make decisions, transact business etc. on the basis of those services (e.g. a legal opinion) and then, if a problem arises (e.g. the authorities require more tax to be paid), that person will use those services to justify its actions. Would "compter sur nos services"/"se fier à nos services" work in this context?
ou peut-etre pourrait-on dire "se prévaloir de nos services"???

disagree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : "compter sur nous" shifts the emphasis away from the meaning of the original which accentuates reliance upon services and not the individuals providing them. Also "compter sur nous" is too familiar in register for terms and conditions.

Recourir est à comprendre dans le sens de "utiliser" les services, par exemple à l'intention d'autres personnes
