: Afterthought ...It would be churlish of me not to give you an "agree", florence, since your product is a perfectly good alternative to "duct tape" (asker needs to decide whether a "toile" type of tape is referred to here)

: "Duct tape" (your illustration below) is used widely on yachts - not just as an insulator (eg protecting standing rigging etc)

: That's what most yachtsmen use as an all-purpose strong tape on boats (Don't know whether it is used in other maritime fields, but logically, yes!)

Interesting ..... ;o)
Florence's comment about "Permacel" rang a few bells, so I did a quick web search. 'Tis just as I thought - "Permacel" is a brand name for (essentially) plastic duct tape. See link below.
Rudi's link calls it "boat tape".
The Plastimo product posted by Florence is an alternative (presumably stronger) using oil cloth as the substrate: see link (product ref is 49325 - "Oil cloth roll, watertight and highly resistant/Toile enduite, imperméable et résistante").
Conclusion : both Rudi and Florence are correct- it just depends what the author had in mind ...

Sorry Radu !!
I don't know why I persist in calling you Rudi - I have a friend called Rudi, but that is no excuse ...
