English term

currant/berry

English to French Other Education / Pedagogy
Could someone explain to me the difference between a currant and a berry, or more exactly why do we use "currant" for some specific fruits and "berry" for others.
It was a question asked by my pupils and I was unable to answer it.
Thanks for your help.

berry = general word / currant = specific varieties

According to OED, 'berry' refers to any small juicy globular or ovate fruit not having a stone (in earlier use, also a grape)

whereas a currant is either a type of dried grape, or the small round edible berry of certain shrubs of the genus Ribes

That solves a mystery that has always puzzled me!

So as Drmanu so rightly gos on to say, currant = groseille (OR raisin de Corinthe when it's the dried grape variety), and berry = baie (or sometimes I guess just 'fruit'?)

agree Brigitte Albert (X) : Exactly. The only thing to change is to write these two words separately: black currant and red currant.
