-> Sorry for not being more clear on that point. I agree that the sense in English is "reduced the altitude by an amount less than 500 feet". I think however that a pilote has hardly any time to count the difference between two altitudes and whether the altitude has been reduced by 501 or by 499 feet. More context is needed in order to see what happens before and after this phrase.

: under 500 would often be below ground level if you are flying QNH unless you are at sea level.

: Your answer actually ambiguous. However, if you mean "we have descended to an altitude of less than 500 feet", it is wrong. The English is unambiguous and means "We have reduced our altitude by an amount less than 500 feet".

Sorry for not being more clear on that point. I agree with you but can hardly imagine that a pilote wouldn't have used the precise figure instead of less which requires counting. More context is needed to be sure that there is no word is missing.
