English term

eked out

English to Arabic Art/Literary History history
the text is historical, it is about the Marcus aurelius, empror of Rome till 180, he had wars with the tribes across the Danube, the sentence in which this word is mentioned is sort of ambigious for me, so could you please help explain the meaning: it is as follows:
the sources available for piecing together an account of these wars is similar to that concerning Trajan's wars. The only narrative source that we know of is Dio Cassius, who again is preserved only in excerpts made by Xiphilinus. Accordingly, the vignettes that struck the abridger's interest are often hard to ascribe chronologically and the narrative has to be eked out of "potted" histories made in late antiquity.

Notice that the text is talking about the narrative, nor the narrator.

Non-ProZ.com Jan 10, 2004:
additional inf. it was mentioned in another text that i had that the accounts of dio Cassius about Roman history, especially that of Rain Miracle, is preserved in excerpt by Xiphilinus who opposes cassius in his explanation that the miracle occured because of magician and Xiphilinus says that the miracle happened because the Christian solidiers prayed to God.

تُحلَب، تُسـتجدى

To be eked out means to be obtained in one minute amount at a time and with difficulty. The expression is commonly used for describing the making of a meager living by hard work.

In my suggestions above, I am comparing the process to milking or begging.
