hij dwong volle zalen tot overgave

Interview with a stage and film actor about his early career in the theatre. Images of bringing audiences to their knees or forcing them into submission don't quite work for me somehow...
Thinking of starting out 'Working solo, he regularly played to a full house,...' Any ideas how to get the idea over?

Comment: "Tough choice between Ken and Siobhan, but I prefer the 'held spellbound' idea. Goes slightly better with single-handedly as well - thanks to Vic for pointing that one out! Thanks, everyone."

he had the entire audience eating out of his hand
... to use a cliché often used to refer to performers and speakers who capture the complete attention and uncritical belief of thier audiences

: he had entire audiences eating out of his hand...at first I found this to be a little too informal, however given the following text I think it would work perfectly.

Single-handedly he made entire audiences surrender to his storytelling
...that´s how I would put it. Although I rather like Siobhan´s and Ken´s translations as well.
