There seem to be several types of these, some for sport, others for education, or for work. More context might be helpful...

表彰会要表彰的肯定是先进个人或集体,“先进”二字属于赘词,没有必要翻译。有谁听说过表彰“落后分子”的?
Peer comment(s):

agree chica nueva : other words for 表彰 are 'recognition' and 'citation' eg meeting/ceremony/celebration to recognise excellence in .../citations for excellence in ...?

advanced commendation meeting

I have also heard of an "advanced commendation conference".
Peer comment(s):

agree Wenjer Leuschel (X) : Do they offer some recommendations in the conference, too?

agree chica nueva : I guess this is the standard Chinese translation for it...(?) - it would be meaningful for a Chinese readership I guess

Commendation ceremony

IMHO, "ceremony" might be a more appropriate term here.

The problem is with 先进 now. If we translate it as "Advanced Commendation Ceremony", it is awkward and misleading, right?

agree chica nueva : interesting isn't it. Could depend how 'Chinese'(and formal) you want it to sound, or whether you want it translated over into a Western equivalent. The definition of '先进' reminds me of 'excellence'...

an award ceremony

Probably leaning towards Australian usage here, I admit.
Peer comment(s):

agree chica nueva : We would probably call them "Excellence Awards" in this part of the world and this society...(does '先进 = advanced' derive from Marxism I wonder?, in which case do you keep the ideology in or replace it with something else more 'Western'...)

Excellence Awards (Ceremony)

先进 = 紧不比较快,水平比较高,可以作为学习的榜样的 eg 先进工作者 先进集体 先进水平

'先进' 也许可以译为'excellence'
