it's the isntruction given to the interviewer.

the English sentence itself is a bit problematic or ambiguous... the patients interrupt WHAT/WHO?? himself? and interrupt FROM WHAT??

婉转地(打断他,并且)引回(原来的)话题

婉转is a good word Ritchest used. But I prefer preserving the original meaning of 打断. The most effective expression would omit "interrupt" and emphasize "refocusing the question."
