English term

chart vs. diagram

English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Biofeedback machine
In my current translation I am repeatedly needing to describe the output from biofeedback machines - displays of up and down lines on a graph, the lines representing temperature, ECG, skin conductance etc. The question is, is a screen or a printed page of these wavy lines a chart or a diagram? My instinct is to call it a chart (thinking of those temperature charts at the bottom of every hospital patient's bed) - but I suspect the client will press for diagram, as the much-used German word is Diagramm. We need to be able to talk of "creating a chart/diagram" by getting particular information from the computer, and "interpreting/evaluating the chart/diagram".

Should I press for "chart", or is "diagram" perfectly acceptable?

this is what I use unless it refers to mechanical engineering diagrams/schematics

agree conejo : I believe "chart" is more in keeping with what you are talking about. A diagram is more like a schematic, or drawing, or picture that explains an object

hi Kirill :-)
agree Ken Cox : definitely -- a plot of measured data or signals is a chart // Oxford dico definition of 'diagram': a simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or workings of something; a schematic representation

thanks Ken for elaborating :-)
agree mstkwasa : Would be "chart" in the UK too.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This is Proz at its best! It's great to have so many "votes" in support of my own preferred option. I have seen so much German usage of the word Diagramm for "chart" that I was beginning to doubt my own sanity on this one, but I now feel that my own instincts have been confirmed."

I vote for chart. Diagram is not perfectly accetable, it is barely accetable at best.
