dual layer applications
Refers to a type of software architecture where the functions of the software are split across two (or more) "layers". The lower layer(s) usually implements basic functions that the higher layer(s) rely(s) on. For example, the international ISO standard for networking software calls for seven layers, where the lowest layer deals with the actual physical connection between one computer and the next (the physical wire), and subsequently higher layers deal with things like communications protocols, security, error handling, etc. The top layer (layer 7) is what you deal with, as a user, when you do something over a network. All the other layers are transparent to you.
