agree ArabInk : agree compel; oblige has more of a moral feel. If you make a promise, you are obliged to carry it out. If you don't, the courts may compel you to do so.

whats wrong with oblige? its used in almost all legal matters, contarcts and papers , would you say "the first party is obliged to pay royalty" or "the first party is compelled to pay royalty"? thank you
