Oops ! my fault for closing it too early but now looking at it "Sugar" is extremely common in the UK, I agree it is the right register here, shame that on Kudoz you cant share the points out. Thanks again.
Non-ProZ.com Sep 1, 2004:
more info I bought a book that had lots of notes all over it even though it was described as "comme neuf". I sent an email to the seller who replied "Mince je ne m'en souvenais pas, vraiement dsole. Ok pour changement, contre quel ouvrage ?

Damn it!

A more polite way to say "Mer..e"!..
Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : actually damn is too strong. darn, nuts, heck, for pete's sake, etc. it's not really that strong. just a reaction/exclamation of surprise (about a situation etc.) familier, not grossier :-)

Thanks, Aoife!
neutral Koen Roelens : You wouldn't find this explanation in any French etymological dictionary, but I wonder if this doesn't have anything to do with the Flemish exclamantion "mens (toch)" (pronounced as "mince" by so many West-Flemish people who emigrated to France(19th C.)??
