Russian term

garmon'

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Novel circa 1900-1910.

Musical instrument.
Context - it is being played in a tavern by a 'garmonist'.

I thought this was an accordion, but one of my dictionaries gives 'harmonium' which is quite a different thing - not nearly as portable as an accordion for a start.

agree Jack Doughty : The song "Одинокая гармонь" is about a lovelorn lad wandering about the streets playing his гармонь to serenade his lady love. He certainnly wouldn't be carrying a harmonium!

Thanks, Alya!
agree Alexander Alexandrov : "Муз. А.

concertina

it's kind of an accordion but smaller and simpler

Actually, neither accordion nor concertina is exactly what a Russian \'garmon\' is, though concertina is closer.

Maybe it can be called a squeezebox?

Garmon / Garmonika / Garmonik (Russian, Belarus - refers to a type of diatonic button accordion prevalent in Russia)
Peer comment(s):

neutral danya : just imagine someone playing concertina in a Russian kabak!

agree Jack Doughty : I don't often agree with two different answers, but it certainly can mean concertina too, and a concertina is certainly, as you say, simpler and lighter, (no keyboard for one thing), so is probably more likely.

Thank you, Jack!

Thanks, Alya!
