Russian term
garmon'
Russian to English
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
Novel circa 1900-1910.
Musical instrument.
Context - it is being played in a tavern by a 'garmonist'.
I thought this was an accordion, but one of my dictionaries gives 'harmonium' which is quite a different thing - not nearly as portable as an accordion for a start.

concertina
it's kind of an accordion but smaller and simpler

Actually, neither accordion nor concertina is exactly what a Russian \'garmon\' is, though concertina is closer.
Maybe it can be called a squeezebox?

Garmon / Garmonika / Garmonik (Russian, Belarus - refers to a type of diatonic button accordion prevalent in Russia)

: just imagine someone playing concertina in a Russian kabak!

: I don't often agree with two different answers, but it certainly can mean concertina too, and a concertina is certainly, as you say, simpler and lighter, (no keyboard for one thing), so is probably more likely.

: деревенская гармонь -- инструмент ГОРАЗДО более простой и незатейливый, чем аккордеон / нет, извините, оказывается, есть существенная разница: концертина шестигранная и расположение ладов не то. Не подходит

Christ Almighty!
товарищи, ну какая концертина в кабаке! скорее всего это трёхрядка типа конструкции Белобородова, хотя возможны варианты. вот тут всё написано про гармоники.
