Dissolve, a definition:

A frequently used transition between SHOTS in which the first shot begins to FADE-OUT as the next shot FADES-IN, overlapping the first shot before replacing it. Often used between scenes or sequences to imply a change of location or a later time, or both.

FADE-IN: Optical effect in which the image changes by degrees from darkness (usually black) to an illuminated image. Often used at the
beginning of a shot, at the beginning of a film, and sometimes at the beginning of a sequence.

FADE-OUT:
Optical effect in which the image changes by degrees from illumination to darkness. Often used at the end of a shot, or the conclusion of a sequence.

FADE-Out/Fade-In : are TRANSITIONS between shots (usually used between scenes and/or sequences. The concluding shot fades-out (usually to black); then , after a pause, the next shot fades-in: the image goes from darkness to illumination.
