French term

cerclé

French to English Tech/Engineering Wine / Oenology / Viticulture wine case packaging
"dans une caisse cerclée"
The wine case is not nailed shut with nails, it is "cerclé" with a hard plastic strip that has to be cut with scissors or a cutter.
What is this called in English?
I've seen "strapped" in the ProZ glossary but was told that this is NOT used for wine...

Discussion

Conor McAuley Jun 10, 2022:
Yes, strapped is gopd.
Samuël Buysschaert Jun 10, 2022:
HTH/Fwiw I agree with Phil and Tony about using "strapped";

For example you can find:
"Wooden strapped crate"

Few visual examples for reference:

There's nothing wrong with "strapped". It doesn't matter what product is inside - this is a packaging term not specific to wine.

In this link, take a look at the second picture (the one showing the case) and you will see two bands like the one you describe:

This is described on the webpage as follows:

La Tâche 2000

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Côte de Nuits, Grand Cru

Excellent level and appearance, case banded until inspection;

What does it mean if a case of wine is "banded"?

I saw a wine auction where a case of wine was touted as being "banded." What does that mean? Is it important?

[...]

Dear Bob,

Some wines are sold in wood cases secured by a strap or band around the box. If a wine lot at auction is listed as “banded,” that indicates the box hasn’t been opened. In the auction world, that can certainly add to a wine’s value.

This video shows a band being cut off with scissors, just as you describe:

agree Tony M : Yes, even though it is called 'strapping ' and we use 'strapped' a lot, I do believe 'banded' is correct in this context.

(packed in) cardboard boxes, secured using plastic straps

The word "cerclée" is redundant.

The straps stop bottles banging against each other during shipping, preventing breakage.
