Gabrielle Leyden Feb 2, 2022:
combined administration As Drmanu49 and others say, combined with protective administration of Uromitexan (if you want to get the whole idea in)
Drmanu49 Feb 1, 2022:
This is a frequent combined treatment.
Sue Davis Feb 1, 2022:
https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/sous-couvert-de.3205... This ref suggests 'under the protection of". Endoxan (cyclophosphamide) can irritate the bladder. 'Uromitexan (Mesna) is co-administered to prevent irritation and bleeding. https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/...

Endoxan: 600 mg IV covered by Urometexan. ( Urometexan is given to cover Endoxan, probably in order to avoid some adverse reactions or for other reason. In this situations we usually say that medication X is covered by medication Y)

Explanation:
Endoxan : 600 mg iv covered by Uromitexan ( and NOT Endoxan : 600 mg iv covered Uromitexan, as I wrote by mistake in the explanation, I can not change.)

= to counter (one of) the effects of

It should be clear to medical people why the two drugs are administered together, but something like "cotreatment", "combined with", etc. might result in non-experts thinking both contribute actively to remedying the problem, where in fact Endoxan can damage the bladder lining and Uromitexan counters that side effect to at least some extent.

The French have gone to the trouble of indicating the protective nature of the administration. This should be repeated in English, I feel. "Under the protection of" is short and sweet and would probably be clear to the professional.

"in conjunction with Uromitexan to counter adverse side effects" is exact, I think, but lengthy.

Note that the square brackets are mine.

ENDOXAN [...]

Peer comment(s):

agree Anastasia Kalantzi : In the sense of deputize, replace, substitute, or appease, diminish, yes it could be.
6 hrs
neutral abe(L)solano : I would avoid the use of this construction, since it may lead to confusion as in "Y counteracts X" (having Y the opposite effect/being the antidote of X). I´m a Pharmacist and "counter/counteract" should be used with extreme caution.

the translator's interpretation doesn't seem too far out given the usually use of Uromitexan to decrease the risk of bleeding from the bladder with cyclophosphamide

Indications/Uses
Prevention of urothelial toxicity due to oxazaphosphorines (Holoxan, Endoxan, Ixoten).
Uromitexan should always be given in tumour therapy with Holoxan. Where Endoxan or Ixoten are being used for tumour therapy, Uromitexan should always be given with bolus doses (over 10 mg/kg) of the cytotoxic agent and in all patients at special risk. The principle risk factors are: previous pelvic radiotherapy, cystitis with previous Holoxan, Endoxan or Ixoten therapy or a history of disorders of the urinary tract.
