French term

bivouac canoë

French to English Other Tourism & Travel
This is in the 'Things to do in the area' section of a (camping holidays) travel guide:

étage bivouac canoë possible au camping

But although I've seen the two words combined quite a lot in French, I can't see the same in English (except in a list). Any thoughts?
Also, don't know what 'étage' is doing here. I can't help reading this as a typo for 'stage' but I don't think it is!

Canoe Bivouac
Sleeping out in the wild away from base camp, or centre, is a magical and memorable experience.
At dusk we load sleeping bags and bivi sheets into waterproof barrels, secured in open canoes. After launching, we paddle down the River Wye to a more remote wild bivi site, well away from roads and villages. We construct our shelter using the canoes. Then it's time to build an open fire and relax over a camp fire meal.
At dawn, after a hearty breakfast we continue our journey downstream before returning to camp.
Canoe bivouacs can run overnight or a full weekend or even longer!
Note from asker:
Actually, I've just gone to this passage to correct this and realize that 'étage' is almost certainly a typo for 'étape' not 'stage' here: the campsite can accommodate people wanting to stay overnight on a canoe bivouac trip.

agree Dominique Stiver : a temporary shelter or camp for sleeping in outside, that is not a tent:

Maybe, it could be referring to part of a trip, but then again, if it is a typo, and it is ‘stage’, it’s referring to learning canoe bivvying skills.

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Little doubt for me that "étage" should be "stage", given the position of "s" and "e" of the keyboard. Also, perhaps you know "bivvy" or "bivy", "to bivvy out"? Those expressions are common and come from "bivouac." ;-) "Canoe bivvy(-ing)" would work here.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks everyone for your contributions. (I wasn't working this weekend, hence the delay in thanking you). I'll go with canoe bivouac. It's unclear whether 'étage' is a typo for 'étape' or 'stage', but as I think the latter is more likely, I may just ignore this as, in the context, it's probably implied (i.e. that this may be the first time people have tried this)."

overnight canoe stop-over

I agree that "étage" is a typo for "étape".
I would combine étape with bivouac in my translation proposal: overnight canoe stopover.
A stopover could last more than one night but overnight makes it a short one and could correspond to "étape".

here you can see that the organisation can lend you a bivvy bag. If you prefer not to bivvy out, then they will lend you a tent instead.

More generally, a "bivvy bag" is a sleeping bag you can sleep outside in without any need for a tent. Some of them have a lightweight metal hoop structure to shelter and protect the head a little. The army use them.
