French term

partie femelle-partie mâle

French to English Tech/Engineering Nuclear Eng/Sci
Looking for a bit of advice from nuclear specialists. The sentence is the following:

"Les ultrasons mesurent alternativement la partie femelle du dispositif, intégrée à la cuve, et la partie mâle fixée sur l'interne."

The text is about an ultrasonic robot used to measure the gap or play between two components of a nuclear reactor - at a depth of 20m within the reactor pool. The aim is to determine whether the space between the internals and the vessel increases over time (as the internals are removed then reinstalled using guide rails when the reactor is shut down).

Can anyone help me then with the partie femelle and partie mâle? Would the "femelle" be the guide rails and the "mâle" the rods? Or have I misunderstood completely?! Is there perhaps a more generic way of expressing the terms?

Many thanks.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

female part - male part

From your description it doesn't sound as if there is any need to over-translate it. There are many parts to a nuclear reactor - it doesn't necessary refer to the guide rails and rods.
Note from asker:
Ah right, wasn't sure if it was that simple. Thank you.
