German term
Weiterleitung
German to English
Tech/Engineering
In a document describing processing of electronic waste: "In Zusammenhang mit der Entsorgung und Weiterleitung der getrennten Fraktionen (von abgebauten Geräten) sind die folgenden gesetzliche Vorschriften zu beachten..."
The meaning is clear to me: some fractions can be passed on to resellers or other processing plants... but I'm stuck for translating the concept... does anybody have a suggestion?

Selected
(disposal, recycling and) consignment to further use
In a technical sense, I think pog451's discussion fits excellently.
However, as the text seems to be in an administrative/legal context, it may be advisable to be more legalistic about it, i.e. list all the avenues.
Entsorgung includes not just disposal, but also recycling. (Entsorgung = Beseitigung (disposal) + Verwertung (recycling).) Broadly speaking, Verwertung can take 4 forms: Wiederverwendung (reuse for the same purpose), Weiterverwendung (further use for another purpose), Wiederverwertung (materials/assembly recovery/recycling), Weiterverwertung (feedstock recovery/recycling). Weiterleitung in your text may well mean Wieder/WeiterVERWENDUNG, thus further use. In effect, you excerpt is too short to see what exactly is intended - as so often, "whole-text-awareness" is of the essence.

Comment: "It was difficult to choose between you and pog451. The original translation was "handing over" and that didn't
seem right to me. You saw the importance of the legal side of the text. After
reading your comment I looked again at the definition given for "Entsorgung" in the original document and come
to the same conclusions as you. So I put the question to the author!
"
6 mins
onward transmission or forwarding
Try either of these, they might fit.
8 mins
Redirect
I'd suggest that the components can be "redirected" in this case. So if you're looking for a general concept, you might want to consider "redirection."
Hope that helps.

Why not 'disposal OR passing on' or 'disposal OR onward transmission.."
If it is disposed of, it can hardly be passed on as well, so I would prefer 'or' to 'and' unless the sense is of getting rid of by passing on...
29 mins
disposal and reuse
OK, it's not a precise translation, but maybe it better conveys the intended meaning (you did ask for 'the concept').
1 hr
disposal and recycling
Since the fractions that are passed on are basically being recycled....(as opposed to being "disposed of") not an exact translation of "Weiterleitung", but might do.
2 hrs
disposal and transportation
I imagine what is really at issue here is the regulations for transporting hazardous waste to companies upstream in the recycling process.
2 hrs
disposal and transfer
Entsorgung - disposal
Weiterleitung - transfer

Fowarding/ "Disposal and and reprocessing"
I wouldnt sweat the translation of "Weiterleitung", It really does mean just forwarding and isnt the key word here. If you want to translate the concept then I would ignore "Weiterleitung" and use something like "disposal and reprocessing" for the relevant phrase.

forwarding
It is much simpler than most people think here:
as you understood for yourself, the sentence means just to seperate disassembled parts of a technical device, the ones for immediate disposal and the others for transportation to a recicling plant or anywhere else...

Nils
