Spanish term

topes de suspensión

Spanish to English Other Agriculture
This is from a questionnaire about prescribing chemical products to treat crops, and should be translated into US English. The context is:

Minimizar el tiempo necesario para determinar qué aditivos serán mejores para mejorar la miscibilidad de la mezcla en tanque, p. ej., los topes de suspensión, reguladores de pH, agentes de compatibilidad, etc.

Can anyone help with 'topes de suspensión'?

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your thoughts. I believe the text had been translated into Spanish before coming to me, so it's entirely possible it was a bad translation to begin with.
Another colleague suggested to me that I could use 'suspension agents/aids', and that seems to fit more or less with what you're suggesting.

I'm sceptical that this is about concentration, as such. But I don't know what it really is. I think we're talking about the suspension of the agent, whatever it is, probably in water, in the mixing tank. Roughly translated, "Which agents will be best to improve the miscibility of the mixture in the tank?" The ST lists 3; the other two kind of obviously make sense: an agent to regulate the pH, an agent to improve the compatibility of the mixture, presumably to make it easier to mix whatever the active ingredient is with the liquid it's being mixed with so it can be applied by spraying or sprinkling or whatever. But the one we're concerned with doesn't seem to be the same type of thing as the other two - it's more of a property of the mixture, rather than an additive like the other two. Anyway, sediment concentration in the mixture is not necessarily the same as maximum concentration level - some of the product may be dissolved in the liquid, not suspended. But all this assumes that whoever wrote the ST was being very careful and precise in their use of language - entirely possible they weren't.

Hi María,
I don't think it can be a typo because it appears again a bit later. The second time the context is:

'Minimizar el tiempo necesario para determinar qué combinación de aditivos usar para la mezcla en tanque, p. ej., adyuvantes/surfactantes, agentes de compatibilidad, topes de suspensión, etc.'

Does it make any more sense there?
Thanks,
Susie

A typo? Could be "tipos de suspensión"? Otherwise it makes no sense in this context.

"tope" as in "limit", "suspension" as in a mixture in which small particles of a substance are dispersed throughout a gas or liquid. Could be??

agree neilmac : I'm pretty sure this is what they mean....
