This is from the history of a patient diagnosed with emphysematous cystitis (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emphysematous_cystitis for information about this condition):

"Al interrogatorio, la paciente refería pneumaturia, disuria, tenesmo vesical y sensación febril. Sin hospitalización reciente ni *instrumentalización* de la vía urinaria."

What does "instrumentalización" mean here? How do we say it in English?

(I'm thinking it must mean some sort of treatment or possibly surgery, but just guessing.)

More info The same textbook refers to Instrumentation as one of the potential causes of pyelonephritis: "Introduction of organisms into urethra and bladder by catheters and endoscopes introduced into the urinary tract for diagnostic purposes."

I was wrong ... in using "urinary tract procedures" in my translation. Just now, in reading a discussion of infectious diseases in the urinary system in a nursing textbook, I come across the following text: "Urinary tract infections occur more frequently in women than men, and the incidence of such infections increases with age, *instrumentation of the urinary tract* and urologic abnormalities ... "

Thanks to everybody who contributed your suggestions, anyway.

catheterization (or similar intervention)

Am wildly guessing that it refers to the fitting of a catheter, or any other similar "instruments". It seems logical in the context.

Hi Neil. Thank you for your suggestion as well. I played it safe and chose to use "procedure" to cover every possibility.
