German term

kann die höhere Bitrate feiner Abstufen als die niedrigere.

German to English Tech/Engineering Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)
This is to do with A/D conversion. The whole sentence reads:

Bei gleichem Arbeitsbereich (der Bereich zwischen kleinstem und größtem Wert des zu verarbeitenden analogen Eingangssignals) *kann die höhere Bitrate feiner Abstufen als die niedrigere.*

I'm confused by the lack of a second verb here and not quite sure how to use the noun "Abstufen" in this instance.

I was thinking of something along the lines of:
In the same working range (the range between the smallest and highest value of the analogue input signal to be processed), the higher bit rate is able to exhibit finer gradations than the lower bit rate.

Discussion

Cilian O'Tuama Jul 23, 2014:
= mit der höheren Bitrate kann feiner abgestuft werden / feinere Abstufungen sind mit der höheren Bitrate möglich
Andrea Garfield-Barkworth (asker) Jul 23, 2014:
That was my thinking too but on querying the client he just says translate it as it stands. Whatever that's supposed to mean.
Cilian O'Tuama Jul 23, 2014:
abstufen is the verb and should not be capitalised

higher bitrate offers finer resolution than lower.

Higher bitrate generally offers better resolution with analog to digital converters.

Different file formats use different bitrates. Choosing the right format allows for the best picture for your needs.
Note from asker:
Thank you. Although what you have written is true it wasn't quite the translation I was looking for.
