German term

actually a math problem

German to English Other
Can someone help me convert a German GPA to the 4.0 system used in the US?

"Immerhin hat rund ein Viertel der Auszubildenden im vergangenen Jahr die Lehrzeit mit einem besseren Notenschnitt als 1,5 abgeschlossen."

I apologize for the unconventional question, but am absolutely brain-dead and working against a mean deadline.

TIA, Beth

There\'s been an error in my calculation. The German grade scale from 1-6 equals a range of 5.0 points. Then, 1.5 is a half a grade point (or 10%) less than a perfect score (1.0 or 100%), thus 90%. On a US grade scale with a range of 4.0, a 90% is 3.6. I hope I have it correctly now. Thanks, Hamo, for planting that seed of doubt!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Went with "above 1.5 (equivalent to approximately 3.6 or better on an American grading scale). Thanks to you all for your calculations and suggestions!"

better than a 3.5

If the grading system provided by Russel and used by the University of Kiel's Engineering Department is typical for all German universities, then the problem is simple -- simply invert the US pattern.

US German
4.0 1.0
3.0 2.0
2.0 3.0
1.0 4.0
fail fail

Thus a 1.5 in German would be a 3.5 in the US.

neutral L. Russell Jones : German high schools have a grading scale of 1-6 (1 being best). My calculation is based on such a scale. It really depends on the institution.

Well, you take the low road, and I'll take the high, and Beth will decide, whether she wanted to know about high school or college GPAs.
agree Corinna Luchtenberg : Actually, in German training programmes/at universities etc. everything below a 4.0 means you fail!

Things have changed considerably since I attended the University of Mainz in Germersheim many years ago. Thanks for your input.

Note

If that is something like Transcript translation, IMHO leaving grading systems "as is" better. Mostly there is explanatory tables wit transcripts to convert them and done by admission of destined institution. otherwise translating them may lead to loss of info.
