Wouldn't tamponade be a type of restriction that occurs only in effusion? It seems tamponade is excessive effusion, to the point of causing restriction. Does your text have references? If so, you might find the answer there.

Tamponar in PT have different meanings (to buffer in chemistry, and to tampon (?) in medicine):
2 Quím. Estabilizar o PH de (solução) por meio de tampão (xx) adequado.
3 Cir. Introduzir tampões de gaze, algodão etc. em (ferida, cavidade) para estancar o sangue, absorver secreção: tamponar um vaso sanguineo.

Note from asker:
Thank you Luiza, though on looking further I think tamponade is only one type of restriction - e.g. http://tinyurl.com/oa8e4lf |
but then wouldn't they have put "tamponamento"? |
But if you look up "derrame pericárdico" in Linguee (no, not my only place of reference!) you can see examples of both terms used in extracts from the BJCVS - ...derrame pericárdico moderado, com sinais de restrição ao enchimento diastólico... and ...Derrame pericárdico e tamponamento cardíaco são complicações descritas do cateterismo da veia umbilical... |
Thanks for your help Luiza - I asked the question too soon, as found elsewhere in the documentation mention of "restrição ao enchimento ventricular", etc. |
