English term
tied-up stall
English
Tech/Engineering
Agriculture, dairy farming
The context is sheds for milk cows.
I'm not sure if this is a set term, or if "tied-up" is just a modifier.
Someone attempted to translate it as:
"a cowshed with limited space inside".
I keep wondering whether the cows, or, the owner's finances are... tied.

the cows are tied and chained
to their places in stalls, they can't move around in their boxes. The more modern , "organic" method is to let them roam freely around the barn.

In the tied-up stall, they are not supposed to turn around, or to kick or get into fights with other animals, but they pay for this in much higher rates of heart and circulatory problems - they simply don\'t get enough exercise!

: Makes sense...and glad I'm not a cow--though I once told my mother-in-law that if she'd been born in India, she'd be sacred!

: Agree, although if the asker's text is referring to a 'milking parlour'(special'shed'where cows are brought in for milking)the cows won't be tethered in the stalls all the time(although such an intensive regime not impossible in some places, perhaps)

Stall(s)
The fact that the animals are attached in some way is already implied in the word 'stall' as stalls have one open side (usually at the back of the animal). So 'tied up' is superfluous.

: with apologies, maybe, maybe not, depending on the type & use of the stall for keeping livestock. Some stalls, eg:in a milking parlour may be open ended, with cows tethered there when brought in for miking, but other stalls, half door -width horse/cow can't turn

I see your point. More context would help.

The facility consists of an administration area that includes a room with view of the double ten herringbone milking parlor; four sections of forty freestalls each where cows can walk, stand, and lie down where they choose; and a space for 48 tie stalls.
The tie stall area accommodates 48 cows that can be tied-up at feed bins for nutritional studies.

: Good ref.showing tied-up stalls.Applicable in a milking parlour(cows just brought in for miking 2or3times per day,and leave),or longer term/in winter/for controlling individual feeding.Stall is traditionallycompartment too narrow horse/cow to turn.
